Antineoplaston Therapy

What is Antineoplaston therapy?

Antineoplastons (ANPs) is a collective term for peptides and amino acid derivatives detected as an anti-cancer agent in 1967 by Stanislaw Burzynski, MD, PhD (Houston, Texas, USA). Dr. Burzynski discovered for the first time in the world that the peptides naturally formed in the human body can control the growth of cancer cells. He paid attention to the fact that some kinds of peptide were deficient in the blood of cancer patients as compared to healthy individuals. He named this group of substances “antineoplastons” (ANPs) and demonstrated that ANPs serve as the base for the formation of a biochemical defense system which suppresses cancer cells while keeping normal cells viable.
ANP therapy is expected to be effective against many types of cancer. Hoever, even in the United States at present, it has not yet been approved as a standard therapy.
ANP therapy is can be characterized by an extremely low incidence of adverse reactions as compared to conventional anti-tumor agents. This is a totally new method of cancer treatment which, because of its rarity, is difficult to receive in Japan and many other countries.

How is Sanbancho Gokigen Clinic related to Burzynski clinic?

At our clinic, Masakazu Sawanobori (Director) took notice of ANP therapy and visited the Burzynski Clinic to study it in detail. Later, ANP therapy began to be applied at our clinic under an affiliation with the Burzynski Clinic.

Can I receive the same treatment in Japan as what was provided at the Burzynski Clinic?

We administer ANP under the different protocol from what has been done at Burzynski clinic. ANP treatment is administered based on 24-hour infusion protocol at Burzyski clinic.
However, in Japan, patients are not allowed to take infusion outside of clinics due to legal constraint. Also, since our clinic does not have beds to hospitalize patients, we can only provide the treatment from 10a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

What is the process involved in administering the Antineoplastons in Japan?

If you decide to take ANP treatment, you have two options:
1. You fly over to our clinic and stay approx. three weeks to learn how to use the special pump for ANP and to get trained so that you can continue the treatment after going back to your country.
In this case, you need to find a local doctor who can import ANP (if you live in other than U.S.*) from the Burzynski Clinic and support your treatment.

*You also need to check in advance if ANP can be imported to your country legally since the law regarding import/export of drugs varies by country.

2. You fly over to our clinic and take the treatment until you have a good result. The length of the treatment period depends on patients' conditions. At the Burzyski Clinic, for instance, most of the patients take the treatment at least for three months under 24-hour infusion protocol. Since we can provide 8-hour/ day infusion protocol at our clinic, treatment period might be longer than that.

How long will we need to stay in Tokyo?

If you wish to learn how to administer ANP by yourself and go back to your country to continue the treatment, you need to stay approx. three weeks in Tokyo in order to learn how to use the special pump for ANP and to get trained.
If you wish to receive the treatment in Tokyo only, the length of the treatment period depends on patients' conditions. At Burzynski clinic, most of the patients take the treatment at least for three months under 24-hour infusion protocol. Since we can provide 8-hour/ day infusion protocol at our clinic, treatment period might be longer than that.

If I decide to go ahead with ANP treatment, how soon would I be able to travel to Tokyo and start treatment

In order to administer ANP treatment, we need to import ANP and its special pump from the Burzynski Clinic. It takes at least two weeks to receive them after we order them. We will place an order when you decide to take the treatment. You can make an appointment at our clinic approx. two weeks after we complete the order.

Is there any adverse reaction upon taking ANP?

ANP therapy is can be characterized by an extremely low incidence of adverse reactions as compared to conventional anti-tumor agents.
However, based on previous clinical studies, Antineoplastons treatment can produce the following side effects: Central nervous system toxicity including blurred vision, ringing in ears, hearing loss, headache, dizziness, slurred, speech, hallucinations, depression, tiredness, mood changes, sleepiness, polyneuropathy (numbness and tingling) and thickening of the skin, arrhythmia (changes in your heart rate), nausea, vomiting diarrhea, anemia, increase of blood pressure, swelling, fluid retention or fluid loss (both of which may be serious ), weakness, electrolyte imbalance including: decrease of calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium, and/or increase in sodium concentration in blood (forgetfulness, confusion, cramps) which in extreme cases may become life-threatening.

How many patients have you treated with ANP treatment?

- We have treated approximately 15 patients with Antineoplastons at our clinic (as of April 2013). The number is rather small since we started the treatment not so long ago and it has not yet been widely noticed in Japan.

Do you accept small children?

- No. We do not accept children under the age of 15 years old as we do not have a doctor specialized in the pediatrics.

Therapies other than ANP

Would chemotherapy affect ANP treatment?

ANP treatment can be taken simultaneously while you take chemotherapy.

My hospital here is offering me chemotherapy, should I start to take the treatment?

I recommend you take chemotherapy first because it is general to choose chemotherapy if your cancer reacts it. However, if chemotherapy does now show desirable effects, I recommend you to try ANP treatment after consultation with your local doctor.

Traveling to Japan

What are we required to take to Tokyo?

Please take something which shows the history of the patience's illness such as inspection results, images, medicines, etc.

Would I need to bring my tumor samples from the surgery with me?

Since we don't have lab to analyze the tumor samples, you don't need to bring them with you.

I already have an implanted vascular access devise port insitu. Could I use this if you require any intravenous medications?

Occasionally, the port can be used depending on the method of intravenous, however, a patient who receive ANP Treatment basically needs to have separate catheter in central vein for safety purpose.

Are there any travel instructions in terms of current medications or in terms of making airlines aware of any issue(s)?

In terms of travel instructions, we do not have specific instructions. Please ask airline companies if there is any.

Do I need to be accompanied by someone when I go to Japan?

You basically need at least one companion, such as your family member, care giver, etc., during your stay in Japan.

Could you introduce hotels nearby the clinic?

We can suggest hotels close to our clinic. Please refer to “Hotels” section on our website.

During stay in Japan

What is the clinic hour?

We open from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Monday to Friday. On Thursday, we open until 9:00 pm.

Are there beds to hospitalize patients at your clinic?

No, we don’t have facilities to hospitalize patients.

How would you treat me if my condition changes outside of your clinic service hours?

Since there are no hospitalization facilities in Sanbancho Gokigen Clinic, you need to see a doctor at a standard hospital while you are in Japan if condition of a disease gets worse outside of our clinic service hours. You need to pay costs for those treatments to the hospital who provides such treatments. You are encouraged to search for those hospitals for urgent consultation if you have some acquaintances in Japan if possible. If you are hospitalized at such a standard hospital, ANP treatment should be suspended since they will not administer uninsured treatment.
If your condition gets severely worse, there is a possibility that a disease condition prevents you from being able to move or take plane to return home in the worst case.
